  • Donate to UNICEF:  UNICEF
  • Donate to the National Autism society:  AUTISM
  • Participate in the National Downs Syndrome Society’s Buddy Walk on Washington
  • Donate to the Downs Syndrome Society
  • Donate to ARC, Pacer, or any number of organizations that assist people with learning differences
  • Donate supplies to a neighborhood schools where children can’t afford to buy their own
  • Donate books to libraries

ISSUE:  EDUCATION/LITERACY

In some schools in the US, kids don’t learn to read until eighth grade.  In many other countries, most kids don’t even go to school, and those who do only go for a few hours each day.  In today’s world, it is impossible to succeed without a basic education.  Educating a population has often been hailed as a good long-term solution to poverty, a way of helping people help themselves.  There are some ways that people of any age can get involved in expanding education and promoting academic success among underprivileged students.

Long Term Options:

  • Be a “buddy” to a kid with special needs if your school has a buddy program
  • Start a “buddy” program at your school for kids with special needs
  • Volunteer to tutor in your community
  • Start a tutoring program at your school or in your community
  • Tutor at a homeless shelter
  • Spend time reading to children in hospitals, homeless shelters, or after-school programs
  • Start a school supplies drive
