22,000 children die PER DAY from lack of basic necessities such as food, clean water, and vaccinations.  One quarter of all children in the developing world are underfed. Up to sixty percent of children in these areas have some cognitive impairment due to a lack of iron in their diets.  Almost 900,000,000 people, three times the population of the United States, have no clean drinking water available to them. About half of the people in developing countries do not have proper sanitation.  Another preventable killer is the lack of vaccines in many parts of the world. About 1,500,000 deaths of kids under five in 2002 could have been prevented by common vaccinations. These statistics are obviously shocking and horrifying, but luckily there is hope.  UNICEF (the United Nations Children’s Fund) has inaugurated a campaign called “Believe in Zero” which is attempting to reduce the number of easily preventable child deaths from twenty-two thousand per day to zero. It is doing so through food programs, vaccination campaigns, and attempts to provide access to clean water for drinking.  In just one year, the number of daily preventable child deaths has dropped from 24,000 to 22,000.  This shows that if we all band together we can end the horror of preventable child mortality. Be a Hero!  Save a life this year!  Help UNICEF!
